Online education:
One in ten prospective students now search exclusively online for classes and programs, a Google and Compete study found. A benefit to taking online courses is that they offer flexibility to the dental assisting student. This is a great option for those who already have time commitments with family and work. Online classes will mold with your schedule—and allow you to log into your online course at a time that works best for you, as opposed to having to attend a lecture at a specific time.
Classroom education:
Generally speaking, this is the best option for students who have a little more freedom in their schedules. That said, the “hands on” training does have some flexibility in their scheduling in that some classes can be taken over the course of couple of weeks. One easy-to-overlook factor when it comes to scheduling is travel time to campus—a long commute can certainly make schedules difficult, especially if you’re planning on working while in school.
Dental externship:
At the completion of the twelve-week portion of the training (online and classroom), all dental assisting students must successfully complete a 40-hour externship in a local dental office. The externship may be completed in one week or may be spread over a two to three week period.
